THE LEGEND OF PARASHURAMA

This legend describes the creation of the west coast of India, the Konkan region in which Konkani originates.

According to the myth, Parashurama fired seven arrows into the sea to create a stretch of land he could claim for himself. Varuna, the sea-God, complied and thus a strip of land emerged from the sea and later came to be known as Konkan, containing seven sectors (Karata, Virata, Marata, Havyaga, Tulava, and Kerala), for each arrow fired.
